5 ways to design your weekly log
Maybe you’re often confronted with the same question, too: Which layout should I choose for next week?
While the original system suggests you to use a daily log instead of a weekly layout, I noticed that a majority of Bullet Journal users prefer a weekly log. It is sort of a mixture of the original Bullet Journal method and the pre-made calendars or planners one can buy. I would assume its due to the fact that many people used a regular planner before, therefore they are more used to those layout styles. Another argument I want to put into consideration is being able to see the whole week at one glance.
To start bullet journaling I found it really useful to combine the weekly layout I was used to with the ideas of bullet journaling.
One of my first spreads was pretty simple: I made a border around the whole page, devided it in 7 boxes and thats it. I was able to add future events and do daily logs within these boxes.
I switched this style and decided to try a boxed layout. It’s some kind of mixture of this and the following layout, which is called vertical layout.
So let me show you now the vertical layout. A lot of premade calendars and planners use either a horizontal or a vertical layout. Both systems are very comfy, they allow to wirte a lot and use several methods like time blocking or color coding – especially time blocking is very easy in horizontal layout. You could compare it to the weekly view of your Outlook calendar.
Of course time blocking would be something you can implement into a bullet journal too!
I changed my style when I was in Brittany last summer. It’s probably some kind of anomaly because it’s a travel journaling spread, but I guess it shows the original bullet journal system very well. I added task lists, journal entries and photos in a spread, without having chosen a fixed space for the day. After one day followes the next one. My appointments were managed through the monthly log some pages earlier.
After a while of using different layouts (more horizontal than vertical) this february I tried (again) daily logging. I reserved two pages for a week and thats it. I liked how it turned out although it looks really crowded in the end. But I struggled with the system a little bit.
So in the end I’m doing both now, letting my creativity flow and try to push myself more into daily logging. I like my colorful calendar, but I want it to be a little bit more like a bullet journal.
